I’m Silvia, one of the Senior Teaching Managers in EF Swara, BSD City to be specific. I’m an ordinary girl who was born in Bandung and has a really great passion for teaching. However, preparing myself to be a good teacher is not an easy path. I could say that the path was kind of tricky and full of challenges.

I graduated from my Bachelor Degree in Universitas Kristen Maranatha Bandung majoring in English literature. At that time, I got a chance to be a part time teacher while I was still studying. It’s not easy I could say, as I needed to manage my time to balance my study, social and professional life. But I was trusted to be one of the managers in an English course in Bandung. At that time, I had a thought that it’s not a good thing to teach without having a really good understanding of becoming a leader and manager at the same time. I started to think about pursuing a further study in my Master degree.

In 2016 I tried to apply for scholarship opportunities out there to continue my master degree in one of the biggest universities in Indonesia, but God held my dream for a while. I got rejected and I even lost my hope. I started to try to wipe away my dream and continue my ordinary life without any thought of continuing my plan. Fortunately, in 2017, one of my friends asked me randomly about my old plan of pursuing my master degree. I had a thought to start my applications again and try to apply myself in two big scholarships which helped students to study overseas.

My first application did not successfully open any gate or chance  to go to Australia. I lost hope and started to doubt the plan again. However, I would like to say thank you to God for closing all those doors and opening an LPDP scholarship for me and helping me to continue my Master degree in Nottingham, United Kingdom. Studying in the UK was one of my life goals, which I used to think that was an impossible thing to do!

I took Educational Leadership and Management at University of Nottingham and graduated in 2019 with distinction. At that time, I started to plan my career in Indonesia. I really want to work with a worldwide company who focuses on teaching but also have a well-known good management system. Therefore, I decided to apply all of my knowledge and understanding about teaching, leading and managing in EF, one of the most well-known English schools in the world. Here, in EF, I learned a lot of applicable skills and got chances to apply all the lessons learned in my Master Degree. It’s a really great opportunity to work with such a big center who has prepared many things related to online teaching.

At EF, online classrooms are not just ordinary teaching classrooms with ordinary teaching activities. We have many aspects to learn and become  more flexible during this not-so-easy situation. We realised that we have to manage ourselves better and also adjust everything so that we can keep our quality high no matter what could happen in the future.. I’m glad to have this amazing opportunity with EF. I believe that EF is the place where you can find that studying English is not as hard as you think, or even online classes will not be as flat as you hear. Try it and you will see!
